About

A little about me:

I am currently the Costume Shop Supervisor at SUNY Fredonia, a college in Western New York. I am an alumna who first graduated in Secondary Education/Earth Science and then returned for a degree in Costume Design and Technology. I completed graduate school at the University of Kansas City-Missouri. Immediately afterwards I became the Costume Professor at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota for 14 years.

When I was young, I was told by an adult that I shouldn't pursue art - they thought I wasn't talented - after seeing one sketch from someone young and not trained. And because I was young and they were an adult, I listened. So I gave up my dream and went into science. I loved science - and math - so it wasn't a complete hardship - but it wasn't my dream. I finally listened to my heart though and figured out how to combine math and art - which became my love of being a Costume Technician. I create patterns for costumes, use logic, lots of math, and lots of creativity. It is the best of both worlds.

But I feel a need for additional artistic endeavors - something personal - an outward expression of inner feelings - of things that just need to “get out.”  In my art, I explore texture, color, and the subtle nuances that emerge. I love the discovery process of design - beginning with an idea or a color and observing what it becomes.  Sometimes the result is what I anticipated, but sometimes it’s a complete surprise.

If there is one thing you get from my site, it's that it is never too late to pursue a dream. Listen to your heart. Find a way.

ARTIST STATEMENT

“I create because I don’t know how not to.”

Creativity:

Thoughts, dreams, inspirations – the beginnings of ideas that develop and grow. How do they manifest – how do they form? Each artist has their own methods, but I often find myself seeing a picture, or a physical thing, or whatever it happens to be, and then reconstructing it into an art piece in my head. I find myself asking how I would convert it to something I could make.

Creating:

The process of creating for me involves a great deal of prep work. I start sketching, allowing my internal process to morph the idea until it manifests as my own design and reflects my personal aesthetic. Then I collect my supplies and get to work.

Creation:

The juxtaposition of shapes, textures, and scale fascinates me. I love depth and space, layers, and taking the traditional or expected and breaking them down or mashing them together. The culmination of the creative process is all an extension of who I am, how I was trained artistically, and how I’ve grown on my own as an artist.
